The Top Paths reports track the top sequence of interactions that users take during their session, giving you a detailed breakdown of user journeys. The report is valuable for analysing step-by-step navigation of high-value journeys because you can identify which specific actions or pages contribute to conversions or where users are likely to exit.

  1. Log in to Matomo and open Behaviour > Top Paths.

  2. There are four reports on the common paths taken by users: the Top Paths reports are available for both URLs and page titles and the Overview reports for both URLs and page titles provide a broader snapshot.

Users Flow – Top Paths – Page URLs

The Top Paths-Page URLs report shows the most frequent sequence of interactions based on the number of visits over the selected time period. For each step in the user’s journey, the exact URL of the page is shown, allowing you to track the precise paths users take through your site. This report helps with tracking precise paths and identifying the URLs that are most important for conversions, exits, or user engagement.

Users Flow – Overview – Page URLs

The Overview-Page URLs report provides a hierarchical view of user interactions, showing the number of visits for each interaction position (1, 2, 3, etc.). It displays the Proceeded Rate, which is the percentage of users who performed a subsequent action (and moved into the next interaction position). The report aggregates user interactions based on the page URLs. Expand the interaction level to view how many users enter a page, where they move next, and at which stages they drop off. You can gain a clear understanding of the entry, transition, and exit points in terms of URL structure.

Users Flow – Top Paths – Page Titles

The Top Paths-Page Titles report is similar to the Top Paths-Page URLs report, but instead of showing the sequence of URLs, it shows the paths based on page titles. This report for page titles is useful when the exact URL structure isn’t critical, and you want a clearer, more user-friendly understanding of how users move between content, especially if URLs are complex.

Users Flow – Overview – Page Titles

The Overview-Page Titles report is similar to the Top Paths-Page Titles report, but instead of showing the sequence of URLs, it shows the paths based on page titles. You can see where users begin, move, and drop off, using page titles and without the need to analyse URLs. As a hierarchical report, you can expand each interaction position to view the number of visits and proceeded rate based on the page title.
