How to copy a Matomo Tag Manager Container and its components
Duplicating a container in Matomo Tag Manager allows superusers to replicate an entire container, including all tags, triggers, and variables, to a different website or for use within the same site. This creates an identical copy of the original container, which can be useful when you need to deploy a similar configuration across multiple projects or websites for your tracking setup.
When a container is duplicated, the container ID and the Matomo site ID (in the Matomo variable) are updated to match the new environment. The current state of the container, including all other settings, tags, triggers, and variables remain identical to the original, and you can modify any component as needed. Note that any unpublished changes to the container will be included in the duplicated container ensuring it is an exact copy.
To copy a container in Matomo Tag Manager, follow these steps:
-
Login to Matomo as a superuser.
-
Navigate to Manage Containers in Matomo Tag Manager.
-
Locate the container you want to copy and click the Copy icon.
-
Choose the website that you want the container to be copied to. By default, the current website is selected.
-
Click Copy to complete the process.
-
After duplicating the container, review and make necessary adjustments, especially if it contains custom code or site-specific references.
Note: The duplicated container will not be automatically published, even if the original container is live. Since the new container won’t be immediately installed on your website, we recommend reviewing all settings to ensure compatibility before publishing to avoid potential issues.
