You probably know ChatGPT, but have you come across ChatGPT Sites?
ChatGPT Sites lets people build, host and publish websites and lightweight apps from ChatGPT, without setting up a separate hosting or deployment workflow. Published Sites also come with a built-in Analytics view. OpenAI hasn’t published a separate launch date for the analytics feature, but describes it as a way to understand how people use a deployed Site without adding an analytics SDK. At the moment, OpenAI documents a relatively small set of metrics, centred on unique visitors, page views and how those figures change over time.
That may be enough if you mainly want to know whether people are visiting your Site. But if you use a ChatGPT Site for content, a campaign, lead generation or another measurable objective, you’ll probably want to know more about where visitors came from, what they did and whether they completed the actions you care about.
This article looks at what ChatGPT Sites analytics currently tracks, what OpenAI hasn’t documented, and where a dedicated web analytics platform such as Matomo provides more detailed measurement.
Key points:
- Core metrics: Sites records traffic automatically, and the Analytics view shows unique visitors and page views, including trends over time, with date range and granularity controls.
- Undocumented areas: OpenAI doesn’t currently document how unique visitors are identified, or whether the Analytics view includes traffic sources, campaign attribution, conversions, segmentation, bot filtering, exports, API access or a defined retention period.
- Enterprise limitation: The Analytics view is currently unavailable for Enterprise-owned Sites.
- Where Matomo goes further: Matomo covers broader acquisition, behaviour and conversion analysis on websites and apps where Matomo tracking can be implemented.
- Matomo tracking: We successfully tested Matomo tracking on a ChatGPT Site and were able to collect analytics data. OpenAI doesn’t currently document an official Matomo integration.
What is ChatGPT Sites analytics?
OpenAI expanded the public beta of ChatGPT Sites on 9 July 2026, although Sites had already been available to Business and Enterprise customers. OpenAI’s public documentation doesn’t give the Analytics view a separate release date.
ChatGPT Sites lets people create, host, refine and share websites, web apps and games in ChatGPT. Published Sites include an Analytics view. OpenAI says Sites records traffic automatically without an analytics SDK.
The Analytics view currently shows:
- Total unique visitors.
- Total page views.
- Unique visitors over time.
- Page views over time.
- Controls to change the date range and reporting granularity.
There is an important limitation for enterprise teams: while ChatGPT Sites is available to Enterprise workspaces, OpenAI states that the built-in Analytics view is currently unavailable for Sites owned by an Enterprise workspace.
ChatGPT Sites analytics capabilities at a glance
| Capability | What OpenAI documents |
|---|---|
| Traffic recorded automatically | Yes. OpenAI says no analytics SDK is required. |
| Unique visitors | Yes. Total unique visitors and a trend over time are shown. Important: OpenAI’s documentation doesn’t currently explain whether the metric relies on cookies, account identity, server-side signals or another method. It also doesn’t describe how repeat visits across browsers or devices are treated. |
| Page views | Yes. Total page views and a trend over time are shown. |
| Date range | Yes. The date range can be changed. |
| Reporting granularity | Yes. Granularity can be changed to compare periods. |
| Enterprise-owned Sites | The Analytics view is currently unavailable. |
What do we know about privacy and data collection?
In the ChatGPT Sites Data Processing Addendum, OpenAI says Hosted Data generated through end users’ use of a Site can include log data, usage data, device information and data collected through cookies and similar technologies. The DPA doesn’t say which of these categories are used to calculate the metrics shown in the Analytics view.
The ChatGPT Sites Terms state that the Site owner is the data controller for personal data collected by a ChatGPT Site. Site owners are responsible for the transparency, controls and consent required by applicable privacy and data protection laws. OpenAI separately notes that non-essential cookies or similar tracking technologies may require consent depending on the location and applicable rules.
When is the built-in Analytics view enough?
For a prototype, small project or Site where the main question is whether people are visiting, ChatGPT Sites’ native Analytics view may provide enough information. Unique visitors and page views give site owners a direct way to monitor audience size and traffic trends.
For teams using a Site as part of a wider marketing, content or product programme, traffic volume alone is rarely enough. They also need to understand where visitors came from, what they did after arriving and whether they completed an important action. Those questions are outside the capabilities OpenAI currently documents for the Analytics view.
What does Matomo offer when you need deeper web analytics?
Matomo is a dedicated web analytics platform, so the scope is different from the built-in traffic view that OpenAI currently documents for ChatGPT Sites. It is designed to analyse acquisition, behaviour and conversions across websites and apps.
Matomo goes beyond overall traffic figures to show how visitors find your website, what they do once they arrive and whether they complete important actions. Teams can analyse acquisition sources and campaigns, page and content performance, events, downloads, outlinks, site searches, devices and geography, then use Segmentation to investigate specific audiences or behaviours in more detail.
For teams specifically analysing AI-driven activity, Matomo’s AI Assistants reports distinguish between human visits referred by AI assistants and supported AI agents or AI chatbots that access website content directly. The available signals and integrations affect what can be detected, so Matomo documents limitations for each category.
Matomo’s product features overview covers the wider range of standard and premium capabilities, including Goals, Funnels, Heatmaps, Session Recordings, Form Analytics and Custom Reports.
Matomo also provides a Reporting API for programmatic access to analytics reports and supports several export formats. OpenAI doesn’t currently document equivalent analytics export or API access for the Sites Analytics view.
Can you use Matomo on a ChatGPT Site?
OpenAI’s documentation suggests that ChatGPT Sites can support analytics beyond its built-in Analytics view. Sites supports external HTTP and HTTPS connections, and OpenAI’s privacy guidance explicitly refers to cookies and similar tracking technologies being used on Sites.
We also tested Matomo tracking on a ChatGPT Site internally and were able to collect analytics data successfully. OpenAI doesn’t currently document an official Matomo integration, so this should be treated as a tested implementation rather than a formally supported integration.
How to decide what analytics you need
Start with the decisions your analytics needs to support. If you only need to know whether a Site is attracting visitors and whether traffic is rising or falling, the native view may be sufficient.
If you need to compare acquisition channels, measure campaigns, analyse behaviour, track conversions, segment audiences or access analytics through an API, evaluate a dedicated analytics platform against those requirements. The Web Analytics Buyer’s Guide provides a framework for comparing reporting, privacy, security, data control, AI readiness, integrations and long-term fit.
See more than traffic with Matomo
ChatGPT Sites removes much of the setup involved in publishing a lightweight website or app, and its built-in Analytics view follows the same approach. Site owners can see unique visitors and page views without installing an analytics SDK.
OpenAI doesn’t currently explain how unique visitors are identified or document common analytics capabilities such as acquisition reporting, conversions, segmentation, bot filtering or analytics API access.
That makes the native Analytics view suitable for a basic traffic check. Organisations that need to understand the journey behind those numbers will need a broader analytics setup.
