Importing Matomo reports into Microsoft Power BI Desktop combines detailed web analytics with powerful data visualisation. You can create dynamic dashboards that make it easier to uncover insights and track key performance indicators across your platforms.

This guide explains how to import and start building your data visualisation with Matomo and Power BI Desktop.

  1. Log in to your Microsoft Power BI Desktop app.

  2. Import a Matomo report by clicking on Home > Get Data in the Data ribbon.

  3. In the Other category, click on Web then Connect.

  4. Enter the API URL of the report that will be imported into Power BI Desktop.

  5. You can get the API URL in Matomo when you export a standard/custom report and click on Show Export URL.
    Note: Replace the text ENTER_YOUR_TOKEN_AUTH_HERE with the unique Matomo authentication token.

  6. After adding the Matomo API URL into Power BI Desktop, click OK.

  7. In the Navigator screen, select the dataset to import and click Load.

  8. With the data now imported, you can start building your data visualisation.

  9. Select the columns to be included from the imported dataset (1), choose the type of Visualisation and customise the Columns display order (2), setup data Filters (3), and view the customised format of data on the page canvas (4).

  10. To import multiple reports, expand the Get data menu on the Home ribbon and select Web.

  11. Repeat steps 4 to 10 to load the data into Power BI Desktop.

  12. With multiple reports imported, you can choose the column data (1) to be included in your data visualisations (2).
