After the top 500 or top 1000 rows, Matomo groups pages under ‘Others’; How to change the report row limit?
Matomo uses limits during archiving to keep reports fast and archive sizes manageable. When these limits are reached, some data may be aggregated into an Others row. The applicable limit depends on the report, your Matomo version, and how the report is archived. Read more about Understanding row limits and “Others” rows in Matomo reports.
If you are using Matomo Cloud, see Default row limits for Matomo Cloud reports.
This guide applies to Matomo On-Premise and explains which settings apply to:
- Page reports using the new archiving process in Matomo 6.
- Actions reports using the same archiving process as before hierarchical archiving.
- Other reports with dedicated row-limit settings.
- Reports that use the shared standard row limit.
You can add or update the relevant settings under the [General] section of config/config.ini.php.
Page report limits in Matomo 6
Matomo 6 introduces a new archiving process for Pages, Page title, Entry pages and Exit pages reports.
With the new process, a single limit controls the number of Page results processed during archiving. Pages are prioritised by their number of visits before the report is built, helping to reduce the amount of data aggregated into an Others row.
New Matomo 6 installations
For new Matomo 6 On-Premise installations, the new Page report archiving process is enabled by default with a limit of 10000 rows:
[General]
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_actions_flat = 10000
Increase this value if you want Matomo to process more individual Page results. Note that higher limits may increase archiving time, database storage, and memory usage.
Upgrading to Matomo 6
For existing installations that upgraded to Matomo 6, the new Page report archiving process is disabled by default to preserve the previous hierarchical archiving behaviour and row-limit settings:
[General]
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_actions_flat = 0
You can enable the new archiving process by changing the default value to the maximum number of rows you want Matomo to process, for example 10000.
The updated setting applies when reports are next archived. To apply the new limit or archiving method to previously processed periods, invalidate and reprocess the affected reports.
Action report limits
Action reports that continue to use the same archiving process as before, have separate limits for their main tables and subtables. Matomo archives the top 500 pages, 1,000 keywords, 1,000 websites, and similar report data. If you need to archive more rows, or all available data, you can increase these limits by updating the config/config.ini.php configuration file.
These settings affect the following reports:
- Page reports in Matomo 5 and earlier.
- Page reports if the new archiving process in Matomo 6 is disabled.
- Downloads report in Matomo 6 and earlier.
- Outlinks report in Matomo 6 and earlier.
For example, to limit all tables to 5000 entries, add the following under the [General] category in config/config.ini.php:
[General]
; maximum number of rows for any of the Actions tables (pages, downloads, outlinks)
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_actions = 5000
; maximum number of rows for pages in categories (sub pages, when clicking on the + for a page category)
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_subtable_actions = 5000
Other report row limits
Other Matomo reports have their own row limit settings. The following example shows increasing report limits to 5000 rows for Referrers, Events, Site Search and User ID reports:
[General]
; maximum number of rows for any of the Referers tables (keywords, search engines, campaigns, etc.)
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_referrers = 5000
; maximum number of rows for any of the Referers subtable (search engines by keyword, keyword by campaign, etc.)
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_subtable_referrers = 5000
; maximum number of rows for any of the Events tables (Categories, Actions, Names)
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_events = 5000
; maximum number of rows for sub-tables of the Events tables (e.g. for subtables Categories>Actions or Categories>Names).
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_subtable_events = 100
; maximum number of rows for the Site Search table
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_site_search = 5000
; maximum number of rows for the User ID report
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_userid_users = 5000
Visitor-related report limits
Some visitor-related reports use the standard archiving row limit rather than having their own report-specific setting. This includes reports such as Locations (Regions & Cities), Languages, Devices, Browser Plugins, and Screen Resolutions.
By default, the standard limit is 500 rows. This setting affects all reports that use the standard row limit. To increase the limit for these reports, for example to 5000 rows:
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_standard = 5000
Custom dimensions row limit
If you are using the Custom Dimensions (or Custom Variables in older Matomo versions), you can also adjust these settings. For example, set the row limits to 5000:
[General]
; maximum number of rows for all individual Custom Dimensions reports
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_custom_dimensions = 5000
; maximum number of rows for the Custom Dimensions subtables (list of all Page URLs per dimension value)
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_subtable_custom_dimensions = 5000
; maximum number of rows for Custom Variables names report
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_custom_variables = 5000
; maximum number of rows for Custom Variables values reports
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_subtable_custom_variables = 5000
Before Matomo 4:
[General]
; maximum number of rows for all individual Custom Dimensions reports, and for Custom Variables names report
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_custom_variables = 5000
; maximum number of rows for the Custom Dimensions subtables (list of all Page URLs per dimension value), and for Custom Variables values reports
datatable_archiving_maximum_rows_subtable_custom_variables = 5000
Custom Reports row limit
The Custom Reports premium feature uses separate configuration settings for row limits. For the default configuration and values, see Matomo Core and Plugin Configuration files – Custom Reports.
Media Analytics row limit
The Media Analytics premium feature uses separate configuration settings for row limits. For the default configuration and values, see Matomo Core and Plugin Configuration files – Media Analytics.
Reprocessing reports
Changes to row-limit settings apply when reports are next archived. Previously archived reports retain their existing row limits.
To apply the updated limits to historical periods, invalidate and reprocess the affected reports. Matomo can only restore rows from periods for which the underlying raw data is still available.
Archiving all data (unlimited rows)
To archive all data, you can set a very high number, for example one million: 1000000.
Important Note: High row limits can significantly increase archiving time, memory usage, database storage and report-processing requirements. Increase limits only as much as needed and monitor the effect on your Matomo environment.
