How to copy a Tag in Matomo Tag Manager

Copying a tag in Matomo Tag Manager is a quick and efficient way to replicate tracking setups across different containers or websites. Learn more about copying a Matomo Tag Manager container and its components.

Note: Superusers and users with the appropriate Tag Manager write and custom template capabilities can copy tags.

  1. Open Matomo > Tag Manager.
  2. Navigate to Manage Containers and open the container that holds the tag you want to copy.
  3. Go to Tags and click the Copy icon next to the relevant tag.

  4. By default, the tag configuration will be duplicated to the same website and container as the original tag.
  5. You can change this by selecting a different website and/or destination container.
  6. Click Copy to create the new tag.

New Tag Configuration

  • If the original tag uses triggers and variables, Matomo Tag Manager will attempt to reuse existing ones in the destination container.
  • If no matching triggers or variables are found, the associated triggers and variables will also be copied to ensure the tag functions correctly.

Example:

  • Copying a tag within the same container will only duplicate the tag.
  • Copying it to an empty container will copy the tag along with any necessary triggers and variables.
